What is Domain?

For those of you who are still confused with the meaning of the domain, don’t worry, this article will provide basic knowledge of what domains are brief, solid and clear. The easiest way to understand what a domain is is to analogize it with your home and home address.

Let’s assumed that you want to have a website that people can visit. There are several things that need to be prepared until finally you have a website that is ready to be visited. One of the most important things is the domain name.

If the website or website is “home”, then the domain or domain name / domain address is “home address”. Every time someone wants to visit our home, we will tell the full address, right? The same thing applies to websites, where certain names will refer to a certain “home”.

But a little different from home addresses, domain names are very important. There are several things that distinguish domain addresses and home addresses.

Domain addresses can be adjusted to our wishes.

The home address must follow the rules. For example if our house is on a mango road, of course we must use the mango street name with a number that refers to our house. It is impossible for us to change the home address according to our wishes right? However, we can choose the domain name according to what we want. Although it is not necessarily available because it is already owned by someone else, there are no specific rules that prohibit us from adjusting the domain name as we wish. But of course there are several considerations for choosing the right domain name.

Domain must be purchased.

Unlike the house whose address does not need to be purchased but has been given because we buy a house in a certain location, we must register the domain address and buy it. How to buy it is to register with a domain registration provider. How to buy a domain we will discuss in another section.

By analogy, let us exemplify, for example, the Google site has a domain name https://www.google.com. The format of this domain address (with http: // and .com - which we will discuss in a separate article) is often termed the URL, which stands for Uniform Resource Locator. If we want to visit the Google website, of course we will write this URL address to the browser. That is the domain name or domain address. What happens if we mistakenly type a Google domain address into https://www.koogle.com? Yes, we can be sure we “mistakenly address” and will not visit the Google website, but other websites.

Using the “home” analogy to understand basic terms in the digital world / website is the easiest way. As an initial guide to other articles, let’s look at this analogy:

  • Website = “Home”
  • Domain = “Home Address”
  • Hosting = “Land”

How To Choose Domain Name

Always get the .com

Nowadays you can easily buy out-of-the-box domain name such .ninja or .bar, it is important to own .com first, especially with exact name of your business in it. With today vast internet adoption, getting a domain that exactly match your business name is really hard. Most of the time a person out there already bought it and it is not available anymore.

Brand (rather than) keyword

While it is in fact keyword in your domain affecting the SEO performance, it always the best practice to prioritize brand first. When you push to merge keyword in your domain name it will become much longer name and we don’t want long domain name. Also it will become generic and feel untrustworthy. Never put SEO above brand, because at the end of the day it’s useless to be the first in search result while it looks untrustworthy.

Unique, short & memorable name

What is better than short and easy to remember name? Amazon, Google, Apple, are short easy to remember name. But then finding a short name, leave alone unique and memorable one, is truly hard. Most of them are claimed and unavailable. But not to worry, believe it or not there are a lot of short, unique and memorable domain name out there that has not been claimed.

Avoid double letter and hypens

Since the domain name can not contain space, double letter word will be hard to read. Unless it’s one word domain name, for example less.com. Hypens is also the thing we should avoid if possible. It’s always an unpleasant experience when you type domain name that has hypen in it. Hypens is also oftenly mistaken and as a result creating typo and going to different website.

Domain name is a brand asset

Always remember that domain name is one if important asset of your brand, especially in today’s digital era. Reserving the one that match with your brand name is really important. As we treat domain name as a brand, you’ll realized that name is not merely descriptive but also distinctive. creating a differentiation among your competition is always essential thing in branding, most importantly in brand name.
